Scattering Light, Scattering Flowers", the third release by composer Marty Regan (b.1972) in the Selected Works for Japanese Instruments series was recorded in Japan, and features large ensemble works for traditional Japanese instruments, including two concertos. Composed for female voice, shakuhachi, and the relatively rare 25-string koto, the title track is based on a deeply poetic text written by Japanese poet Haruka Nakanashi that echoes with references to traditional Japanese noh theater.

I started composing Beyond the Sky... with the intention of writing a fanfare for Japanese instruments, music that would take Japanese instrumentalists beyond what they are normally accustomed to; hence the bright, optimistic, and noble opening, which announces that something great is about to happen. Considering the theme of ‘The Sound of Bamboo’, the shakuhachi plays a prominent role throughout, ending the fanfare with wild, muraiki bursts of air that leads into the main section of the piece. This animated, pulse-oriented rhythmic section is characterized by lively contrapuntal activity in the kotos that support soaring melodies in the shakuhachi above, echoing the poetic sentiment found in the title. This section uses a pentatonic scale, which, in combination with the rhythmic energy, imparts a positive spirit and youthful vigor. A slow, lyrical middle section provides contrast, where the three shakuhachi play expressively using warm, rich, and resonant harmonies. A transition leads the listener back to the the main section of the piece, winding up to a wild and fiery finish.

Marty Regan, Program Notes

Wonderful record with excitingly melodious and fluidly exotic music of not very well known composer makes me want to find previous volumes of this series. If anyone is in possession, don't hesitate to share! If anyone is interested, one of his blog posts tells about the shakuhachi making workshop in Barcelona, of all places!
